I think it needs to be aggressive. At least one slip, mid on, mid off, close cover, square leg, third man, backward point/gully, spread the rest to fill the gaps.

Mine would be:

The 6 (mid off, cover, backward point, square leg, mid wicket, mid on) and a slip, deep extra cover and deep backward square leg for me.

I would say have a fine leg and third man becuase there are a lot of edges along the floor down past the keeper!
Ross do you really need a slip at your age?

Maybe a fine-ish fairly short 3rd man just to stop nicks going for any runs and to prevent inside edges getting to the ropes. My team tends to have a fly slip.

mate i set the field on what the batsman's doing or what i think he gonna do. if the balls swingin away ill have a 1 st and 2nd or 3rd slip. And i would have a off side biased field. but if its swinging in il have only first slip and a few bhind square and a leg side biased field.

Depends on many things - the accuracy of the bowler, type of game, wicket and weather to name a few.

If you're stuck for ideas then go for the classic, two slips, deep fine leg, then an inner circle and outer circle.

You can tweak it from there to fit most situations.

It has it's merits. The key to cricket is to keep it simple, but we all see the pro's and think that we should be trying to emulate what they're doing. We tend to forget that that the guy at the other end probably isn't good enough to work the ball around and find the gaps.

If they are, then you can get creative with the field.

1 slip
1 gully
1 3rd man
1 fine leg
cover
extra cover
then common sense after that
